The killing was anti-climatic and rushed imo. In the build-up to the long-awaited series finale, “24” has not, apparently, gone soft. At the beginning of season five, former President David Palmer–the inspirational black president who was arguably the most beloved character on the show outside of Chloe O’Brien–was assassinated. At the end of season one, Bauer’s wife (and the mother of his daughter, Kim) was killed. Throughout its eight seasons, “24” has made a point of taking no prisoners and promising no happy endings. Apparently out of the CTU game and hoping to live a life together, Walker’s death ended another fleeting hope for happiness on the part of Jack Bauer. Her death, achieved by a Russian sniper who feared that Walker’s past undercover stint with the Russian mob could lead her to recognize him and identify Russian involvement in the current conspiracy, came literally moments after Bauer and Walker engaged in long-awaited sexual intercourse. Having essentially served as a “female Jack Bauer” in her two-season stint on the show, Walker had become the fans’ ideal companion for Kiefer Sutherland’s Jack–she had eclipsed even his prior flame Audrey Raines (Kim Raver) as the most-requested “girlfriend” character. Last week, Hassan–a crucial ingredient in the landmark peace process between the Middle Eastern IRK and the Western World–was executed by a terrorist faction committed to derailing the thawing of relations with the US.īut for as tragic as that death was for “24” fans, it could not prepare them for the death of Renee Walker on this Monday’s episode. They wanted it to be that we were just pausing for a second and were going to go back. Two weeks, two major deaths, two “silent endings.” FOX’s “24” has definitely raised the stakes as it approaches its series finale, killing off progressive IRK president Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor) and fan favorite Renee Walker (Annie Wersching) in a mere two week span. It was all about the logistics of getting a shirt on him for when he takes her to the hospital it was bad enough he was barefoot. There was also the option of starting to and having her be shot. He was like, "I've been asked to do this one other time in my career when I was 18, and they never asked me again." It was a big decision for him to commit to whether or not he really wanted to do it. How was shooting the scene like for you and Kiefer? : Renee is the only woman to have sex with Jack Bauer on TV. Renee is as close as he was going to get to finding someone that really got him, and vice versa. No one truly understood what it is to exist as someone who has to do the things that Jack Bauer does. Wersching: In not knowing each other for that long, they are very similar and understood each other in a lot of ways. : What makes the relationship between Jack and Renee different than the ones he's had in other seasons? When I learned that it was in Episode 17, I found out from a director who was like, "Oh I just read Episode 17 and you get it and then you get it." I was very emotional that night. I thought, "Oh, bummer," but a cool a- death on 24 is like a big moment that you remember years later, so I knew it would have a big impact. Wersching: I'm a huge 24-head and have watched every episode of every season. : Were you sad when you found out she was going to die?
